Are you looking forward to 2019?

2018 was an interesting year but I’m more than ready to move on.

Even though I’m not a huge fan of New Year resolutions, I am for new beginnings and reemergence. I came across a quote by Zora Neale Hurston a couple of weeks ago and it got me thinking.

“There are years that ask questions and years that answer.”

As I grow older, the years seem to be getting shorter and shorter (or going faster and faster, I don’t really know). A lot happens in 365 days with regards to experiences, relationships and lessons learnt. We go through these things in a variety of ways and throughout the year, we each walk our own path.

So with 2018 coming to an end, I find myself considering Ms. Hurston’s words from her famous book “Their Eyes Were Watching God”. Despite all the clichés that flutter around our feed this time of the year, her words stand out to me so strongly and made me reflect on 2018 in a new way. Am I left with questions, or do I have answers? We’ll table that discussion for another day.

For now though, as we begin 2019, may we find a measure of peace in the questions that still endure. It can be quite disconcerting and worrying to search for clarity and certainty in the midst of the complexity in our world. It is normal to seek reassurance that there can be meaning in the peaks and valleys of our everyday life.

So no matter how the past year, months, weeks, days or hours have been, whatever you’re looking to achieve, stay your path. If 2018 was a year of questions, your answers are out there finding their way to you. As Ms. Hurston reminds us, there are years where the dots don’t connect and the way forward seems to be littered with obstacles or is just simply unclear.

As you start the year, may God grant you the grace to remain patient and endure, and find rest in His promises and His faithfulness. Keep searching and keep believing. The New Year offers us the hope and the promise that something bigger and better lies ahead. So, may 2019 come with the patience to endure the questions that go unanswered and the courage to live out the answers that do come.
