de Young Museum | SF

Life did not intend to make us perfect. Whoever is perfect belongs in a museum.
— Erich Maria Remarque

When I remember this quote, I get a little confused. I have spent a lot of time in a lot of museums…a lot, but I struggle to remember seeing a piece in a museum that I would ever be described as perfect. Definitely not in within the context of capital “B” beauty.

Art is never concerned with being perfect.

It thrives more in just being.

So, I guess I understand it. I just disagree.

de Young Museum was the highlight of my visit to San Francisco.

I left the house right after it rained. It was a light pour - one after a long stretch of sunny days. It started and ended quickly, and because the earth was dry from the days of sun, the air smelled like earth. You know that smell, the …scent of earth after a short rainfall.

I forgot to buy a ticket for the Alice Neel exhibition, but the guards were kind to let me in anyway.

I made a new friend and his name is Dennis. Dennis was 7 and was very kind to show me the (very blurry) photos he’s been taking with his new disposable camera. I had a camera and he had one too - we bonded over that. Then we talked about how much we loved Dragons: Rescue Riders (which I love) and Kipo and the Age of Wonder beasts (which I promised I’d watch). It was a great and very short-lived friendship. Dennis left with his mom and dad.

Right outside the museum, a live band played for hours, and they were amazing. It was a perfect day.

If you’re ever in the area, you must visit.

I brought a little bit of it to show to you.

Hope you enjoy it!

Igho, xo
